Nizhni Novgorod, one of Russia's largest cities, is located in the Russian heartland, at
the picturesque confluence of the Volga and the Oka rivers. Founded in 1221, the city has a long
and interesting history and is proud of a great number of historical, architectural and cultural
monuments.
UNESCO has included Nizhni Novgorod in the list of 100 cities constituting world historical
and cultural heritage.
Its magnificent geographical situation was instrumental in making Nizhni Novgorod a major center of
trade and industry. Between the years 1932 and 1990, it was known as Gorky (after the great writer
Maxim Gorky). It has an international airport and can be easily reached by train from Moscow or
St.Petersburg.
