Sergei Nikolayevich Gurbatov. Born 8 February, 1950. Doctor of Sciences (Physics and Mathematics) (1986), professor of the Department of Acoustics at the Faculty of Radiophysics (1988), head of the Acoustics Department (1986), dean of the Faculty of Radiophysics (1994-2003), Vice-Rector for Development (2003-2008), Vice-Rector for Research (since 2008).

Winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for a cycle of research papers: “The dynamics of intense noise waves and nonlinear structures in nondispersive media” (1997), Honored Worker of Higher Professional Education of Russia (2006). Head of Russia’s leading research and teaching school and leading scientific school “Theoretical and experimental study of random wave processes in natural media”. Winner of the State Scientific Scholarship (1994, 1997, 2000). Professor Emeritus of the University of Nizhni Novgorod (1999), Soros Professor, Chair of the Specialized Council D 212.166.07 on physical and mathematical  sciences at  UNN, member of the Specialized Council D 002.069.01 at IAP RAS, member of the editorial board of the Acoustical Journal, board member and vice-president of the Russian Acoustical Society, member of the American Acoustical Society, Member and Chairman of the organizing committees of several national and international conferences and science schools.

He graduated from the Radiophysics Faculty of the Gorky University in 1972 with honors in  Radiophysics. The subject of his doctoral thesis was “Nonlinear interaction and scattering of random waves in nondispersive media”. He passed research fellowships at the Danish Technical University (1983) and Cambridge University (1990).
Prof. Gurbatov’s research interests include the theory of nonlinear random waves and turbulence, waves in random media, nonlinear acoustics and ocean acoustics. He is the author of more than 250 scientific papers published in journals: «Izvesiya VUZ - Radiofizika», «Acoustical Journal», «JETP», «Uspekhi Fiz. Nauk», «Mon.Not. R. Astr. Soc.», «J. Fluid Mechanics», «Physical Review E»,  «Physics Letters A», «Physica D», «Chaos». He co-authored four monographs and four textbooks. He supervised research under the grants of the Ministry of Higher Education, RFBR, INTAS-RFBR, INTAS, of the research and education center under the program “Research and teaching staff for innovative Russia”. He was deputy head and executive director of UNN’s innovative educational program within the priority national project “Education” (2006-2007) and is currently in charge of the Program for the development of UNN as a national research university in 2009-2018.

The topic of his D.Sc. dissertation is "Non-linear interaction and dispersion of random waves in non-dispersive media". He had research placements at the Danish Technical University in 1983 and at Cambridge University in 1990. Area of scientific interests: theory of non-linear random waves and turbulence, waves in random media, non-linear acoustics and ocean acoustics. Co-authored the monograph "Non-linear random waves and turbulence: waves, rays and particles" and the book "Acoustics in problems".
