The Archive functions with the Department of Russian Classical Literature. Its materials have been collected by folklore expeditions undertaken annually since 1957. From 1958 to 1961 such expeditions were supervised by Assoc. Prof. V.M.Potyavin, since 1962, by Assoc. Prof. C.Ye. Korepova. Expeditions mostly covered the territory of the Nizhni Novgorod region.

The Archive includes:

• descriptions of family rites and customs, wedding folklore;
• descriptions of calendar and occasional rites;
• incantation verses;
• popular beliefs, mythological stories;
• legends;
• fairy-tales;
• songs of various genres;
• religious verses (spiritual verses, chants, psalms);
• chastooshka folk verse;
• riddles, sayings, proverbs;
• contemporary mass poetry;

children's folklore, etc.
