The Department of Economic Sociology was established in 2006. The foundation of the Department was suggested by rapid development of economic sociology and growing acknowledgement of importance of social issues for understanding of the economic system evolution. Different levels, branches of Government and society got interested in such issues, that also caused the foundation of the Department. The Department of Economic Sociology utilizes the experience of the leading Russian and foreign universities. The Department research activity is also guided by particularity of Nizhniy Novgorod scientific school. As a result, the Department aims to form a unique center, combining broad academic basis with research experience. The Department of Economic Sociology participates in sociological research in different fields:

The Department of Economic Sociology has mutual collaboration with Central and East European Studies School of Social and Political Sciences University of Glasgow (UK). Since 2007-2008 the head of the Department Nina N.Ivashinenko has been a Honorary Research Fellow at Glasgow University, dealing with poverty reduction approaches. Two PhD students of Glasgow University had their field-work at The Department. In 2010 there was an international project "Participatory approach to poverty reduction". The results were presented at the international conference, took place in Nizhniy Novgorod in November, 2010, and also at Annual forum of Central and East European Studies School of Social and Political Sciences of University of Glasgow in May,2011. The Department took part in a workshop on poverty reduction in Glasgow University in May, 2011.
Graduate Students may be employed in different fields of academic school, research institutions, municipal governmental bodies in different area: marketing, public relations, staff management etc. The main lecture courses taught by the Department staff are:
