The Department of General Sociology and Social Work was founded in 1992 on the basis of the Historical Faculty of Nizhniy Novgorod State University. The Department started its activities at the crucial moment of the development of Russian society when the need for sociological analysis of social processes was widely recognized. The need for training qualified specialists in the field of social work was also realized at that period.

The Department of General Sociology and Social Work is one of the main structural units of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department actively co-operates with several scientific and educational centers in Russia and abroad including Moscow State University, St.-Petersburg State University, Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Duisburg-Essen University (Germany), University of Warwick (UK). The Department co-operates with Russian and foreign non-governmental organizations and foundations.

Lecturers from Moscow and St.-Petersburg universities are regularly invited to teach at the Department. In the framework of annual specialized courses the students have an opportunity to meet professors from Germany, United Kingdom, the USA and other countries.

The Department actively co-operates with regional and municipal governmental bodies. Its main partners are the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of Nizhniy Novgorod region and the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the city administration. One of the results of this co-operation was working out the project of Foundations of regional family policy. Participation of the Department of General Sociology and Social Work in this project was due to its research experience in the sphere of family and gender relations.

The Department organizes the students' practical work in sociological research centers, their teaching practice in schools of Nizhniy Novgorod. Students specializing in social work participate in practical work at several organizations of social welfare dealing with family problems and problems of disabled persons.

The teaching staff of the Department includes qualified specialists. Postgraduate students of the Department actively participate in scientific research. Several of them have received diplomas of the All-Russia competitions of young scientists. Many postgraduate students join the faculty after finishing their studies.

The Department conducts training in the following professional fields: Sociology, Social Work, Management of Organizations. The training is carried out on the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Graduates of the Department occupy positions in regional and municipal governmental bodies, work in marketing companies and sociological research centers, social welfare institutions. Postgraduate studies can be continued in the fields of social structure, social institutions and processes; sociology of culture; sociology of organizations.

Lecturers of the Department teach more than 100 courses at the Faculty of Social Sciences and other Faculties of Nizhniy Novgorod State University, at the Regional Center of Education in the Humanities.
